Missed Periodontal Disease Treatments Lead To Tooth Loss

When an adult notices teeth which suddenly appear loose, a receding gums treatment is usually the first course of action pursued. Initially the patient may not pay too much attention to the loosened teeth. In fact, they may quite possibly ignore the sensations accompanying them. As the symptoms become more pressing, the receding gum line and loosening teeth are hard to ignore. It’s at this time other symptoms accompany the loosening teeth and dental assistance is sought.

It is noteworthy to note loosening teeth and receding gums are not usually concurrently presenting with sore, bleeding gums. But, instead simply a dull pain around the gum line and an increased sensitivity to hot or cold sensations on the teeth themselves is present. When the onset of the condition becomes fairly noticeable, the patient initially seeks to counteract the perceived problem at home. An increase in brushing, flossing and mouthwash use is often reported. Unfortunately, at this point in time the damage is already done and cannot be counteracted by previously neglected oral care.

When the patient does make the initial appointment, it quickly becomes obvious after some probing there is a need for a receding and bleeding gums treatment. During this examination the dentist seeks to gain an understanding, with respect to actual damage to the teeth. Problems such as cavities and hair line fissures that occurred because the teeth’s alignment has changed are often noted. The goal of course is to halt the receding gum line and maybe even affect a reversal of the process. However, this is a goal that can only be considered after evaluating the overall health of the gum tissue and any bacterial damage done between gums and teeth.

After the dentist has a fair understanding of the damage, the first order of treatment is plaque removal. This process, done during a gingivitis treatment can immediately enable the patient to perform the at-home oral hygiene needed to keep the teeth and gums healthy. Thereafter it is crucial to determine if the gums are likely to recover and firm up or if the loosening teeth need to be fixed, before this process may occur. In some cases the gums are so damaged actual surgery needs to be performed in order to keep them marginally healthy and able to fulfill their function.

Patients should realize missed periodontal disease treatments lead to tooth loss. Of course, the appointment itself is not the end of the problem. Following the oral hygiene routine dictated by the dentist is vital to avoid further damage and preserve the teeth. Especially if surgery needs to be performed on the gums, a change in the oral care regimen may be prescribed to aid in its effectiveness.
